MacLean Bolter Trainer
Location: Northen Ontario
Position Summary
The MacLean Bolter Trainer is responsible for developing the competency of underground bolter operators through classroom instruction, practical underground training, coaching, and competency assessments. The role ensures operators are trained to safely and effectively operate MacLean bolting equipment while adhering to company standards, safety procedures, and manufacturer recommendations.
The trainer works closely with Operations, Health & Safety, Maintenance, and Supervisors to improve operator performance, productivity, and safety.
Key Responsibilities
Training & Development
- Deliver theoretical and practical training on MacLean bolting equipment.
- Train new operators in the safe operation of MacLean bolters in underground environments.
- Conduct refresher and upgrade training for existing operators.
- Develop individual training plans based on operator experience and competency.
- Coach operators to improve productivity, equipment utilization, and work quality.
- Mentor operators until they achieve operational competency.
Equipment Training
Provide instruction on:
- Pre-operational inspections
- Safe equipment start-up and shutdown procedures
- Ground support installation
- Resin and mechanical bolt installation
- Cable bolting (where applicable)
- Scaling awareness and hazard identification
- Safe tramming and positioning
- Equipment controls and functions
- Drill setup and positioning
- Troubleshooting common operating issues
- Daily care and basic operator maintenance
Competency Assessment
- Conduct practical competency evaluations.
- Assess operators against company operating standards.
- Maintain training records and competency documentation.
- Recommend certification or additional coaching where required.
- Monitor operator performance following training.
Safety
- Promote a strong safety culture.
- Ensure compliance with:
- Ontario Mining Regulations (or applicable jurisdiction)
- Company Safe Work Procedures
- Ground Control Management Plans
- Lockout/Tagout procedures
- OEM operating guidelines
- Conduct field observations and provide coaching on safe work practices.
- Participate in incident investigations involving bolting activities when required.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify training gaps.
- Recommend improvements to training materials and operating procedures.
- Support implementation of new equipment, technologies, and operating practices.
- Liaise with MacLean Engineering representatives regarding equipment updates and training requirements.
Qualifications
- Underground Common Core (or jurisdictional equivalent)
- Valid Underground Hard Rock Miner certification
- Train-the-Trainer certification (preferred)
- Valid Driver’s Licence
Experience
- Minimum 8–10 years of underground hard rock mining experience.
- Extensive experience operating MacLean bolting equipment.
- Demonstrated experience installing various underground ground support systems.
- Previous experience training, mentoring, or coaching operators is highly desirable.
- Experience working in mechanized underground mining operations.

- Underground hard rock mining environment.
- Frequent travel underground.
- Rotational shift work as required.
